Pounta Beach - The Heart of Paros at Play
Kitesurf days, beach-club afternoons, DJ sunsets. Twenty minutes from Parikia, the wind is the headliner.
What you'll see
Pounta sits on the south-west coast of Paros, a long sandy beach that doubles as the most kinetic stretch of the island. By day it is the wind-sport capital of the Cyclades, with kite and windsurf schools running back-to-back lessons against the meltemi. By late afternoon it shifts gear: beach clubs fill up, DJs take over the speakers, and the sun sets straight into the channel between Paros and Antiparos.
The drive is short and easy. Twenty minutes south of Parikia along the airport road, then a clear sign at the turn-off for Pounta. There is no village to speak of, just the beach and a row of clubs along the sand. Parking is free behind the dunes; arrive before two in high season or you will be walking a bit.
Pounta is best known for wind sports. The bay catches the afternoon meltemi like a funnel, which is ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing once you have taken a lesson or two. Two long-running schools, both walk-in friendly, rent gear by the hour or the half-day. Instructors speak English, French, and Greek, and beginners can be up on a board the same afternoon.
The other reason to drive here is the nightlife. Pounta Beach Bar runs sets from late afternoon into the night, with international DJ residencies through July and August. The format is a Cycladic beach club rather than a city night-club: sand under your feet, the sea fifty paces away, drinks served in plastic, no dress code. Tables fill up fast for sunset, so reserve ahead in peak weeks.
Sunset is the unmissable moment. Pounta faces due west across the narrow channel to Antiparos, and the sun drops straight into the gap, sometimes silhouetting the ferry as it crosses. The crowd thins between sunset and ten in the evening, then builds again for the late sets. Plan your drive home for either before midnight or after two and you will avoid the busiest traffic.
Two practical notes. The car park is unattended and the road back to Parikia is unlit in places, so drive with care if you have enjoyed the bar. The meltemi can also be strong here in July and August, so bring a light layer for after sunset, even on a hot day.
Pounta also doubles as the gateway to Antiparos. The small ferry to the other island leaves from the same headland, so it is easy to combine a morning on Antiparos with an afternoon at the beach clubs. See our Pounta and Antiparos guide for the ferry details.
